Quad 303 Power Amplifier

The Quad 303 Power Amplifier is a modern reworking of one of British hi-fi’s most iconic amplifier designs. Created as the natural partner for the new Quad 33 preamplifier, it retains the compact proportions, understated styling and musical character of the original while introducing substantially updated circuitry, greater power and much improved loudspeaker compatibility.

The result is a compact Class AB power amplifier that combines classic Quad engineering principles with the performance expected from a modern hi-fi system.

Modern Class AB Amplification

The new 303 uses a Class AB amplifier design based around Quad’s famous symmetrical triples output stage. This topology was originally developed to reduce distortion while maintaining excellent stability, and the modern 303 retains that principle while moving to a fully complementary output stage with contemporary power transistors.

The result is greater linearity, improved stability under demanding loads and the smooth, controlled presentation for which the 303 name has long been known.

50 Watts Per Channel

In stereo operation, the Quad 303 delivers 50 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 70 watts per channel into 4 ohms. While those figures may appear modest beside some larger modern amplifiers, the 303 is capable of delivering up to 10 amps of output current, giving it the ability to control a wide range of modern loudspeakers with confidence.

This is particularly important because the original 303 was less comfortable with low-impedance speaker loads. The new model has been specifically engineered to address that limitation.

Bridged Mono Operation

For systems requiring greater power, the 303 can be switched into bridged mono mode. In bridged configuration, a single 303 can deliver 140 watts into 8 ohms or 170 watts into 4 ohms.

Using two 303 amplifiers as monoblocks provides substantially greater power and channel separation while retaining the compact footprint and distinctive styling of the standard stereo configuration.

Custom 200VA Toroidal Transformer

A custom-designed 200VA toroidal transformer forms the heart of the power supply. This gives the 303 a strong and stable energy reserve while helping to keep mechanical noise and electromagnetic interference low. The amplifier has been designed to deliver consistent power under real-world listening conditions rather than chasing headline output figures.

Balanced XLR and RCA Inputs

The new 303 offers both single-ended RCA and balanced XLR inputs. This makes it straightforward to connect to the matching Quad 33 preamplifier as well as a broad range of modern preamplifiers and source components.

Balanced XLR connectivity also makes the 303 suitable for systems where longer cable runs or improved rejection of electrical interference are useful.

12V Trigger Control

A 12V trigger input and link output allow the 303 to power on and off automatically alongside compatible components. When partnered with the Quad 33, this creates a particularly neat and integrated pre/power system with simple day-to-day operation.

Compact Classic Styling

The Quad 303 retains the distinctive upright proportions of the original design. At just 120mm wide, it occupies very little shelf space and looks especially striking when positioned alongside the matching Quad 33.

Finished in Classic Quad Grey, the styling pays clear homage to the original while using modern materials, construction and detailing.

The Quad 33 and 303 were originally conceived as a complete pre/power system, and the modern versions continue that philosophy. Together they create a compact, fully analogue hi-fi system with MM/MC vinyl support, balanced connectivity and the option to expand from a single stereo 303 to a pair operating as monoblocks.
