The Quad 33 Preamplifier is a modern reworking of one of British hi-fi’s most recognisable designs. Inspired by the original 33 from the late 1960s, the new model retains the compact proportions, distinctive controls and classic Quad character while introducing a completely updated analogue circuit, balanced connectivity, MM/MC phono support and modern system control.

Designed as the natural partner for the Quad 303 Power Amplifier, the new 33 delivers a refined, low-noise signal path with the flexibility required for contemporary hi-fi systems.

Classic Quad Design, Reimagined

The new Quad 33 takes clear inspiration from the original model, but this is far more than a cosmetic recreation. Its compact chassis, grey finish and distinctive control layout evoke the classic design, while the internal electronics have been completely re-engineered for modern performance. The anodised fascia, illuminated controls and rigid construction give the 33 a premium feel while preserving the visual identity that made the original so memorable.

Fully Analogue Signal Path

Although the 33 uses digital microprocessor control for operation and interface functions, the audio path itself remains fundamentally analogue. Volume adjustment is handled by a precision motorised ALPS potentiometer, preserving a pure analogue signal path while still allowing full remote control. Quad has kept the core signal path short and direct, with careful attention paid to low noise and minimal interference between sections.

Balanced XLR Connectivity

Unlike the original 33, the modern version includes balanced XLR input and output connections alongside conventional RCA sockets. This gives the 33 greater flexibility when used with modern source components and power amplifiers, while also making it particularly well matched to the new Quad 303 or other suitably equipped power amplifiers.

A dedicated RCA pre-output and separate AUX output are also provided.

MM and MC Phono Stage

Vinyl playback is a major strength of the new Quad 33. Its dedicated phono stage supports both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges, selectable without the need for internal modifications or additional boards.

Gain is rated at 46dB for MM and 63.5dB for MC, with ultra-low-noise op-amps and a dedicated RIAA equalisation stage helping preserve detail, dynamics and tonal balance.

Quad Tilt Control

One of Quad’s most distinctive features returns on the new 33: Tilt control. Rather than simply boosting bass or treble independently, Tilt shifts the overall tonal balance around a central pivot point, allowing the presentation to be subtly warmed or brightened without upsetting the natural balance of the music.

Additional tone control functions give further flexibility for room acoustics, recordings and personal preference.

Dedicated Headphone Amplifier

The 33 includes a dedicated current-feedback headphone amplifier with a low 2.35-ohm output impedance. It is designed to work with headphones between 20 and 600 ohms, making it suitable for a wide range of hi-fi headphones without the need for a separate headphone amplifier.

Low-Noise Power Supply

Internally, the Quad 33 uses a custom low-noise toroidal transformer, multiple reservoir and smoothing capacitors and five regulated supply rails. Ultra-low-noise regulators and extensive separation measures are used to minimise cross-contamination between sections, helping the preamplifier maintain a clean and stable signal path.

Illuminated LCD and Intuitive Controls

A backlit LCD display provides clear information on source, settings and adjustment values, while the push buttons are individually illuminated for easy operation. Display brightness and contrast can be adjusted, and the illumination can also be switched off completely if preferred.

Three additional rotary encoders provide direct access to Quad-specific tone and balance functions, preserving the tactile feel that has always been part of the 33’s appeal.
